Excerpt from a Stearns County property deed, June 23,1958

From 1920 to the 1960s, racial covenants like this one were added to property deeds across Central Minnesota. Racial covenants prohibited people who were not White from owning or occupying property, which legally segregated neighborhoods along racial lines.

While racial covenants are no longer enforceable today, the effects of racial segregation in the past continue to reverberate in the present. We are a team of researchers committed to documenting the history and legacy of racial covenants in Stearns, Benton, and Sherburne counties. As we move forward with the project, this website will serve as a platform to map the data, provide resources, and share findings for public use.
